Otto Dix, born in 1891, is a German expressionist painter. He comes from a working environment, but he receive an artistic education from his mother who was interested in music and painting.
He is admitted in 1910 at the decorative arts school of Dresde, one of the expression center of Germany.
During the first world war, he is a volunteer soldier and receive the silver cross.
The traumatizing effects the war on Dix were translated by an expressionist form. He keeps a graphic diary to draw what he sees and what he feels like, wich represent almost six hundred drawed pieces with what he could afford, in the trench. He is seriously injured several times on the ground and the war horror will affect and traumatize him deeply, like most of his work will witness.
The rising of nazis force Otto Dix to quit his teacher post the the Dresde academy acquired in 1927, being considered as an degenerated artist, (in 1937, his work were told "degenerated" by the nazis), 260 of his paintings were removed from museums and part of them were burned.
Captured by the french troops in the second world war, he will return to Dresde in 1946 only.
Traumatized by the two wars, Otto Dix died in 1969 at the age of 78 years, leaving behind him a heavy testimony of human horrors.
"??? painting is not a relief. The reason why I paint is the desire to create. I have to do it (?) ! I saw that, I can still remember it, I have to pain it." Otto Dix
