    a) Find the words or expressions in the text meaning :

    -     to be allowed = "had been given permission"

    - without tax = duty-free

    - to beat in a war = "defeated"

    - to be given a position = "was appointed" first  Governor ( was given the position of Governor = on l'a nommé, on lui a donné le poste de ..)

    - dispute = "fights"

    "an Indian soldier in the service of the British" et "to get better in a conflict" n'ont pas d'équivalence dans ce texte..
